Sir,
1037
G. REGY
I have the honour to refer to the
correspondence terminating in the Duke of Levonshire's
despatch No.23 of 2nd February, 1923, and to forward
for your information a copy of a circular letter of
appeal issued by the Committee of the War Memorial
Nursing Home, which has, partly as a result of the depressed conditions of the Colony, become involved
in financial difficulties.

2. As reported in my confidential despatch of
17th November, 1936, it is intended, simultaneously
with the opening of the new Queen Mary Hospital in
the spring of 1937, to close permanently the present
Victoria Hospital as well as the present Government
Civil Hospital. As a result, the War Memorial
Nursing Home (which is actually a hospital rather
than a nursing home) will remain the only hospital
on the Peak and conveniently accessible to Peak
residents. The Matilda Hospital, as you are no
doubt aware, caters only for Europeans of limited
means, and I cannot but think that the public, which
viewed with comparative equanimity the disappearance
of the Victoria Hospital, would view much more
seriously the total disappearance of hospital
facilities from that district.
